Curtsies and Conspiracies by Gail Carriger

This series is so much fun. I had wondered for a while if I was going to enjoy steampunk and I definitely do. It opens a whole new world to science fiction and then adding female protagonists like this really helps to make looking at the past a little more enjoyable for someone like me.The entire idea behind the Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality is entertaining and it even makes me more conscientious about some of those feminine things that I’ve overlooked over the years.

Getting back to Sophronia and her friends, this book is a continuation of their time at the Finishing school. Unlike the last series that I reviewed, the plot here is entirely its own. School continues, but new shenanigans ensue. Some interesting new characters are also introduced, the best of which is Lord Mersey. The girls are getting a little older and interactions with the opposite sex get a little more interesting, especially with some high ranking boys around.

I have to say too that one of the other great things about this is the inclusion of the supernatural element with the science fiction of it. The world is beautifully built and well explained. I’m glad that Carriger has written so much in it.

Have you read Curtsies and Conspiracies? What did you think?
