It amazes me that we need to build awareness that this illegal and incredibly immoral thing is still happening in our world after the opposition that exists to it at such high levels. And yet….
There are so many problems with recognizing what slavery and human trafficking looks like today because we are so ingrained in our ideas of what it looked like long ago. People may not be sold in the same public manner that they once were but we’re far from a world where people aren’t sold at all. There are several organizations that track figures on the state of slavery and human trafficking today and even more that strive to fight it. Here are some places to go and see what’s going on in our world today when it comes to slavery and human trafficking:
All of these can always use donations to help their efforts. There are some books that have been integral in helping my understanding of the state of slavery and human trafficking.
- The Last Girl: My Story of Captivity, and My Fight Against the Islamic State by Nadia Murad
- Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide – updated
- Girls Like Us: Fighting for a World Where Girls are Not for Sale, an Activist Finds Her Calling and Heals Herself by Rachel Lloyd
These books focus more on the sex trafficking and sex slavery side of things and therefore women and girls. Slaves are still trafficked for labor as well, which does affect men more than women. According to the Global Slavery Index, women are twice as likely to become slaves as men but that doesn’t make men safe from it. If you need to put a face or story or some sort of background information to knowing that slavery is still a thing in this world, pick up one of these books.
